Checking in! I know it's been too long; I'm really bad about that.
Everyone check in on this thread please~ I want to know how you are doing, where you are, favorite care bear, etc.
I'm still in school and scraping a living waiting tables. Gotta love life in America. =P I've started Chinese and Japanese as well and will be majoring in Korean/minoring in Chinese at UT in Austin, Texas. Considering my current age (dear God...) I might have to go straight after my MBA instead of romping away a few more years in Korea. Unfortunately, an MBA is the only way to get an actual degree as an interpreter. Unless, of course, any of you have any information on an alternative to another two years of post-graduate study....
Miss you all; fuckers!! =D

my favorite carebear is Professor Coldheart. Does he even count?
i'm in Columbia, SC. its pretty cool here. I live in an area that used to be abandoned warehouses, but was 'gentrified' about 10-15 years ago so now its where all the bars and clubs are. I also live half a mile away from the former confederate mint (one of the only structures in the city not burned to the ground during the American Civil War), which is now a Publix grocery store.

My favorite carebear is Conan the Carebearian.
I'm in Queens. Second year of law school. I have no time and none of my hard work will get me a job. Married life is great. I live off of student loans, which somehow always take forever to actually get to me. I should be waiting tables.
Good to hear from you.

my buddy got a gig as a wills and trust attorney in NY. he just moved into a place near times square. he had mentioned that in the midst of the recession, he couldn't get anything other than paid internships around 2k/month -- but thats improving now.

OK, here's the deal:
In the late 50s-early 60s, the Warren Court created all sorts of new ways for people to sue on a Federal level - modern civil rights litigation. At the same time, a judge in California called Trayner was dramatically reforming state laws to make them easier, more adaptable and more reasonable. Put the two together, and you get a whole lot more lawsuits. That's not entirely bad - lots of people suing forced lots of companies and employers to stop screwing people over - but it created the need for lots of lawyers.
So lots of universities started making law schools, and law schools that were around started getting bigger. And as the economy got bigger, and business went global, people all over the Earth were needing US lawyers to help them manage their problems in America, like Japanese companies that would get sued when the Taiwanese tires on their cars busted on roads in Oklahoma.
Salaries for lawyers just kept increasing, to the point where only a year or two ago, a person straight out of law school could earn $160,000 a year. Of course, those people were at the top of their classes, working in NYC, a tiny fraction of the total number of law students. But people looked at all those zeros and jumped in, thinking they too could be rich and have interesting jobs.
But while all this was happening, the Supreme Court was in the hands of Roberts, Scalia, Alito, Thomas, and sometimes Kennedy, and it was walking back a lot of the laws that Warren created. Nobody really noticed, because the salaries kept going up for lawyers. Until the Great Recession hit.
Now we have over 200 law schools in a country that has more lawyers per capita than any other on Earth, and is slowly losing reasons to sue. The contraction begins.
What's that got to do with me? Hey, I wasn't going in to law school to work for Big Law and be a rich slave, right? Right - except now I'm competing with all those guys at the top of their classes who decided that they would apply for shitty government jobs. What's worse, all those guys WITH shitty government jobs who would normally be leaving for lucrative jobs after a few years are looking at the economy and staying where they are. So there are more people fighting over fewer jobs, and the law school keep pumping them out.
This doesn't mean I'm totally screwed, or that it's a waste of my time. But it is a problem a lot of law students are losing sleep over, and it means you have to really work your ass off, because you know it's competitive out there.

Good to hear from you all. Sorry again for being away so long. WoW is partly to blame for that. Haha~
I know what you mean, Burke. I have to work to fill in the areas where I'm not getting GI Bill money. Luckily, I'm from Texas; a crippled Texas senator got a bill passed for Texas veterans that pays 100% tuition in public universities. I can't use it until my GI Bill is done next year, which is good because I'll be ready to transfer then.
On a side note -- the Cleveland Show fucking sucks.... It seriously fucking sucks.

Dunno what's my favorite care bear but I took a quiz to see which one I am. Which Care Bear Are You???
You are most like Tenderheart Bear. Tenderheart is a loving and lovable bear who knows lots about helping others share their feelings. By helping people show they care, Tenderheart Bear helps spread love and make it grow. He wears the perfect symbol for his job on his tummy a heart.
His Caring Mission shows people how to care. His Symbol in the shape of a heart represents his famous loving care. His personality is caring and kind. His Character Quirk is that he's a real daredevil in any vehicle from a skateboard to a cloudmobile. His color is Brown. His Best Friend is Grumpy Bear. His Relationship Challenge is helping Funshine Bear know when it's the wrong time to joke. Motto is Nobody cares like a bear.
So I guess that's me? lol
Hey man, you're one of the people I missed when I was on the road. Too bad we never met in person. One of these days I may make it out to Texas again for a few shows. Hope to see you then. I am currently working nonstop and going to school nonstop with school 6 days a week and work 5-8 days in a row at a time, my album is constantly getting put off because of time issues to the point where I don't think anyone cares anymore and I am trying to find a way back to Korea ASAP. My psychobilly band is taking a break from shows because we're supposed to record an album soon but that's also gonna be tough with my schedule.
But other than that, all is dandy.

It's okay, you don't have to read it. Although it does make me wonder - if five or so paragraphs are too much for you to read, how do you function?
Good to hear from you, Joey.

Hi Joey. I got drunk at your house. And then you never picked up your phone so I had to spend a night in the cab of my truck freezing near Lake Texahoma with some catfish in the back.
God Bless America.
I'm in Iraq with about 3 more months to go. I piss in bottles and I'm hardcore awesome. I watch a lot of MST3K and I started dipping. Like a lot.

Whoa! I hadn't read any of this thread and am just now finished reading the whole thing.
My notes about the thread -
Joey - I've never exchanged thread messages with you, but I am Sean A aka Gwarmonger. I joined Broke last Spring. I spend the last summer in Korea.. it was sweeeet.
The only thing I know about from the Carebears is vague vague memories from my childhood of the CareBears movie. I am about to search for that same movie on torrent sites right now because now I have to remember that movie fully.. and that I kind of frightening...
I will say, I did actually read Park Hyun's rant about lawyering in the USA.. and I actually found it quite informative. This actually comes right after I heard a similar rant from an old friend of mine that recently dropped out of law school in NYC to make environmentalist documentaries in Miami (ugh.. poor girl). It was interesting though.. I have heard this observation before... I do find it interesting.
I also noted that our friend Fireiic is moving to San Antonio whence he came. I think it is his half asian/half whitey ethnicity that DOES make him look Latino (ok maybe not THAT much..but he could pull it off in a Hollywood movie). You ought to introduce yourself as Andrew Gonzalez just for shits and giggles. I don't know why... it just sounds funny to me.
And I think the last think I need to note... is WHERE THE FUCK DID YOU GET THAT MELVINS BEAR?!?!? Holy shit! I love you Jules.. whoever you are! That is one badass Carebear! DAaaamn a sweet Melvins satan bear.. omg I need one! I for one, DO worship the Melvins as gods.
